The Woman and the Dragon of Revelation 12
Revelation 12:
1And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
2And being with child, she cried travailing in birth: and was in pain to be delivered.
3And there was seen another sign in heaven. And behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns and on his heads seven diadems.
4And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered: that, when she should be delivered, he might devour her son.*

Who is she?
Several Bible scholars have proposed several theories about who this woman could be. According to Dr. Elmer Towns a college and seminary professor (Baptist Christian) there are 3 popular views of this woman. 1) The Virgin Mary 2) The Church the Bride of Christ 3) The Nation of Israel.
He then goes on to say how he discounts that Mary could not be the woman as no where in Scripture are the descriptions mentioned in Verse 1 (woman dressed in the sun) befitting of Mary. In terms of the second theory, the Church being the woman, his theory does not hold true is because the Church did not give birth to Christ as mentioned in Verse 4.
He believes the woman to be the Nation State of Israel for the following reasons:
- The number 12 appears in Israel’s history as the number of its 12 patriarchs, 12 disciples, and 12 thrones (Matthew 19-28).
- The sun moon and the stars mentioned in the passage in revelation is attributed to Jacob’s dream in Genesis 37:9. “Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”
The passage mentioned that “In Revelation 12:1, Israel is seen, not as she has been or is now, but as she will be. It is the nation of God as He intended her to be, a condition that will be fulfilled in the reign of her Messiah. ”

I however beg to differ with this Protestant position and position held by some scholars of the Catholic Church who believe it to be symbolic representation only.
Another author Trent Horn makes a case in Catholic Answers, which I think is largely true but a round about way of saying why the woman in Revelations 12 could be Mary.
Mary is the ever-virgin, mother of God, mother of all believers and Ark of the New Covenant who stands in contrast with the Ark of the Old Covenant that is also depicted as being in heaven in the preceding verse (Rev. 11:19). Even Perry, an Evangelical Christian, admits “As part of the New Testament canon, Revelation’s depiction of the heavenly woman completes the biblical Marian material.”

Why do I think it is Mary?
Here is why I believe the woman mentioned in the Book of Revelations is none other than Mary.
Link with 12:1 – The apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Miracle of the Tilma. If you haven’t had the time to go through the apparition it is described in detail on the site “https://americaneedsfatima.org/articles/our-lady-of-guadalupe” From here the symbolism of the sun moon and the stars takes on a new meaning. God has deigned that he will eventually reveal the woman of the Revelation 12 over the course of time when the events foretold are nearing fulfillment and not lost to history. Of all the apparitions of Mary the one that transformed pagan hinterlands of the Americas is the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I have this image in my house of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the representation of Mary clothed in the sun with the moon under her feet and the stars on her mantle (46 stars) which are the exact representation of the constellations in the night sky over Mexico at the time of her apparition, December 12, 1531 (12/12/1531). The symbolism of the tilma is spot on. “Our Lady, as she appears, eclipses the sun, showing her superiority over the Aztec sun god. She stands on the moon, trampling the Aztec moon god under foot. She is surrounded by clouds and attended by an angel, showing that she is not of this earth. Yet her hands are folded in supplication and her head is tilted in a position of humility, thus showing that while she tramples the pagan gods, she is not God. Around her neck, she wears a brooch with a cross, leading mankind to the Supreme Being, the God of the Christians.” Mary intervened in history after the major events that unfolded in Christianity forcing division in the Catholic Church. Mary appeared to a pagan nation and performed the greatest conversion in all of history with over 8 million Indians being converted in 7 years since her apparition.
Link with 12:2 – Fatima Prophecy and other Marian Apparitions : Marian apparitions have become more frequent in the last 400 years with virtually no place in the world being untouched by her. The “woman” mentioned in the Revelation is an allusion to Jesus on the cross asking his mother first “Woman behold thy son” and asking St. John to “Behold thy Mother”. Notice Jesus call his mother “Woman” instead of mother and in fact refers to her as “Mother” to St. John. So when Jesus says “behold”, He establishes the relationship of “Woman” & “Child/Son” of the Revelation of those who will be spiritually reborn into the New Church through the reception of His mother. Thus, the new Church which Christ established on this earth through His sacrifice cannot exclude Mary His Mother through whom all men (and women) must be re-birthed to be part of His Church. Why? Because both the new Adam and new Eve have rejected Satan by crushing his head truly. Like it took both Adam and Eve to fall from grace and for the whole of humanity to be corrupted, in the same manner, both men and women need to humble themselves before the throne of God and accept to be born of a woman one whom God the Almighty Himself was born of. This mystery is truly unique if you try to understand it, how God loves a “humble” person. The rejection of Mary is rejection of the path God chose for mankind and is the same sin that Lucifer is guilty of, Pride.
Link with 12:4 – The Great Tribulation and Mary’s Ark. Without a doubt the Mother of God has been warning mankind of the need to repent and change to prevent the Chastisement that will behalf mankind if “Man” does not turn away from their Apostasy and wicked deeds. From La Salette, Fatima, Garabandal, Medjugorje and Akita, Mary has been shedding tears and asking for prayers and conversion because she cannot “stop the hand of God” and His justice from lashing out and crushing evil. If we die in the state we are in, our souls will be lost forever and there is no time or hope for salvation if we reject the Hand of God or His mercy. The Catholic Church today is totally infiltrated by the Freemasons which Mary tried to warn humanity of in the 3rd secret of Fatima. The real secret of Fatima has never been revealed to the word. But if you do your research well, you will conclude from all that is happening around you, that this was always the end goal of the Anti-Christ mentioned in the Book of Revelations. To infiltrate and devour the Body of Christ through His Church. All those who do not seek Mary or are not wrapped in her cloak/mantle, their case is hopeless – for she is the only one who is the “Ark” and the “Gate of Heaven” whom Satan cannot prevail against. It does not mean that we will not die, what it means that Satan will not succeed in stealing our souls if we commend ourselves to the Divine Mother entrusted to us by God.
In Mary you have the fulfillment of Old Testament and the age to come. God in His wisdom foresaw the path humanity would take and has taken upon Himself to rescue us. In this rescue mission God Himself came to the earth in the person of Jesus assuming the human and Divine nature in order to offer us spiritual re-birth forged through the uncorrupted path of His life blood. For this blood He had to forge his Divinity with His earthly mother’s DNA and in the bargain – Mary had to integrate with the Divinity of God to bring forth His son. So also Mary will birth the new Church of Her Son which He entrusted to us on the cross. Thus Mary and only Mary fulfills the role of the woman of the Revelation.
